The Italian Navy stated that Baykar’s Bayraktar TB3 UCAV can be operated from the aircraft carrier Cavour. The TB3 marks a new era in fixed-wing UCAV operations in Europe.
Aircraft Carrier Integration for TB3
The Italian Navy announced that the Bayraktar TB3 unmanned aerial vehicle can be operationally used from the Cavour aircraft carrier.
Navy Commander Vice Admiral Giuseppe Berutti Bergotto stated in his first speech in parliament that the TB3 has the capability to take off from and land on the ship.
A New Era in European Navies
The integration of the TB3 will make the Italian Navy one of the few navies in Europe capable of conducting fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UCAV) operations from aircraft carriers.
This development is also considered an indication that unmanned systems will play a more active role in naval forces alongside manned aircraft.
To Be Procured Through LBA Systems Cooperation
According to the report, the procurement of the TB3 will be carried out through LBA Systems, a joint venture between Leonardo S.p.A. and Baykar.
This cooperation stands out as part of the strategic partnership between Türkiye and Italy in the field of the defence industry.
Increased Capacity in Unmanned Systems
Vice Admiral Berutti Bergotto emphasized that the navy is expanding its unmanned systems portfolio. In this context:
- Use of ScanEagle on FREMM-class frigates
- Introduction of new VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) platforms
- Enhancement of maritime surveillance and strike capabilities were stated to be ongoing steps.
The Role of VTOL Drones and TB3
It is noted that next-generation VTOL unmanned aerial vehicles can easily operate from ship platforms thanks to their vertical take-off and landing capability, and can carry precision-guided munitions when required.
The TB3, on the other hand:
- Can take off from short-runway ships
- Can remain airborne for extended periods
Stands out as a multi-purpose UCAV capable of performing ISR (intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance) and strike missions
Previously Tested on TCG Anadolu
The Bayraktar TB3 had previously demonstrated its operational capability from TCG Anadolu as part of NATO exercises.
These tests revealed the TB3’s suitability for ship-based operations and its versatile usage potential.
