On Thursday, an American Airlines Boeing 737-800, operating flight 850 from Miami to Kingston, Jamaica, experienced a frightening incident at the airport.
Due to severe weather conditions and heavy rain, the aircraft’s ability to decelerate on the runway was compromised, causing it to skid off the runway to the left. The plane managed to re-enter the runway under its own power and came to a stop. However, there was unspecified damage until maintenance inspections were completed.
It was reported that the plane’s engines, landing lights, landing gear, and other components sustained damage. Fortunately, the aircraft was able to taxi to the parking area without assistance.
Passenger Richard Pandohie shared his experience: “Our landing was rough, even scary. Despite the serious damage to the plane, we are thankful for the safe landing. The AA flight crew remained calm and professional… Life has a way of reminding us that every day is a blessing.”
The cause of the runway excursion was attributed to water accumulation on the runway due to heavy rain at the airport. An aircraft landing on a waterlogged runway can hydroplane, where the wheels skid on the water’s surface without making proper contact with the runway, leading to a loss of directional control. In such cases, the braking and steering efficiency of the plane is significantly reduced, a known phenomenon called “hydroplaning.”
