Spain Seeks New Aircraft to Replace F-5 Jets: TUSAŞ HÜRJET Spain’s New Favorite

Spanish Air and Space Force is in search of a new aircraft to replace the F-5 jets in its inventory. One of the notable contenders is the HÜRJET, produced by the Turkish company TUSAŞ (Turkish Aerospace Industries).

Lieutenant Colonel Hugo Garcia Galán, Deputy Head of Operations responsible for the New Generation Weapon System projects of the Spanish Air and Space Force, stated in a speech at the Royal Aeronautical Society meeting that they are looking for a new aircraft to replace the F-5 jets. In his speech, Lieutenant Colonel Garcia mentioned, “We are interested in several aircraft to replace the F-5 jets. Among them are TUSAŞ HÜRJET, Boeing T-7, Korea Aerospace Industries T-50, and Leonardo M-346. We currently have four options, but other companies may also be included. Besides these options, we could also consider aircraft from France, Italy, or the United Kingdom.”

The features of TUSAŞ HÜRJET, which is at the top of the list of aircraft being researched for acquisition in Spain, are as follows: The HÜRJET Advanced Jet Trainer is designed to play a critical role with its single-engine, tandem, and modern avionics suite-equipped cockpit, providing superior performance characteristics.

The armed variant of HÜRJET, with its wide mission range and superior payload capacity, is a significant power element in combat zones. The HÜRJET Project was initiated to replace the T-38 aircraft used in Jet Transition Training and the F-5 aircraft used in aerobatic demonstrations within the Turkish Air Force inventory.

In addition to these features of HÜRJET:

  • It is intended to replace Jet Training Aircraft with a service life exceeding 20 years.
  • It is also targeted to be used as a jet trainer to address the rapidly increasing number of 5th generation aircraft (TFX, F-35, etc.) and their updated configurations.
  • TUSAŞ has launched the HÜRJET Program to tap into the market potential by utilizing its cost-effective knowledge and experience in the production and design of training aircraft/systems.

The technical specifications of HÜRJET are as follows:

  • Length: 13.6 meters
  • Wingspan: 9.5 meters
  • Height: 5.1 meters
  • Wing Area: 35 m²
