Singapore Airlines’ Compensation Plan for Severe Turbulence Incident

Singapore Airlines plans to compensate passengers following severe turbulence experienced on the London-Singapore flight on May 20, 2024. The incident resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries among passengers.

According to the company’s statement, passengers with minor injuries will receive $10,000, while those with serious injuries will be compensated with $25,000. These compensations are part of the support measures to address the grievances of the affected passengers.

Singapore Airlines also announced that all passengers will receive a full refund of their ticket prices and delay compensation in accordance with European Union or United Kingdom regulations. Additionally, passengers who had to leave from Bangkok will receive a budget of 1,000 Singapore dollars to cover urgent expenses, medical expenses for the injured will be covered, and arrangements will be made for family members to fly to Bangkok.

On May 20, the Singapore Airlines flight that departed from London encountered severe turbulence over Myanmar, losing 54 meters in altitude in 4.6 seconds. This incident resulted in injuries to 104 passengers and the death of a British citizen due to a heart attack. The aircraft made an emergency landing at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

Following the incident, it was reported that passengers and crew not wearing seatbelts were thrown from their seats, hitting the cabin ceiling. The airline stated that 11 injured passengers are still receiving treatment in hospitals in Bangkok.
