Saab will carry out advanced conceptual studies for the new-generation fighter aircraft programme under a contract covering the 2025–2027 period, with a total value of approximately SEK 2.6 billion. The project will advance the “F Series” concept, which includes both manned and unmanned platforms.
Swedish defence and aerospace company Saab has undertaken advanced conceptual studies to be carried out between 2025 and 2027 under a new contract signed with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV). The total value of the contract was announced as approximately SEK 2.6 billion.
The programme covers concept development activities for both manned and unmanned solutions and aims to evaluate these platforms within a unified systems ecosystem. Within the scope of the project, UAV concepts in various classes — including Loyal Wingman-type unmanned aerial vehicles — will be developed, while research and experimental demonstrators will also be created for advanced technologies. Developers are expected to deliver certain technologies and provide demonstrator prototypes by the end of 2027.
F Series Concept and Platforms
Saab’s publicly announced F Series plan includes a new manned fighter aircraft and a fleet of unmanned platforms in three classes:
- Light, cost-efficient subsonic UAV: under 1 tonne,
- Medium-class subsonic UAV: up to approximately 5 tonnes,
- Supersonic, fighter-class UAV: over 5 tonnes, with performance comparable to a manned fighter jet.
All F Series platforms are designed not as separate systems but as parts of an interconnected and coordinated ecosystem. The goal is to integrate these platforms with the advanced Gripen E fighter aircraft to create a shared combat capability.
Artificial Intelligence and the Centaur Control System
Saab is also testing the Centaur artificial intelligence control system, which is planned to play a key role in managing these platforms on the JAS 39E Gripen. Centaur, developed for BVR (Beyond Visual Range) training and long-range air combat capabilities, is envisioned as a fundamental control element for the optional integration of F Series platforms and the new manned fighter aircraft.
Collaborations and Strategic Partners
Within the scope of the project, Saab will work closely with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), the Swedish Armed Forces, the Defence Research Agency (FOI), GKN Aerospace, and other strategic partners in the defence industry. The current contract is an extension of the previous agreement signed in March 2024, demonstrating the continuity and deepening of the programme’s collaboration.
Saab Aeronautics Head Lars Tossman commented on the matter, saying:
