Qamishli Airport, which was closed following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria at the end of 2024, witnessed the landing of an aircraft for the first time in months. The aircraft, reported to belong to Russia, landed at the airport under heavy security measures.
Today, notable activity was observed at Qamishli Airport, which was closed to both civilian and military flights after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime at the end of 2024. For the first time in months since the regime’s collapse, an aircraft landed at the airport, which had remained shut.
The aircraft, said to belong to Russia, landed on the runway of Qamishli Airport at around 15:13 today. It was reported that high-level security measures were taken at the airport and in its surroundings prior to the landing.
According to information obtained, just before the aircraft landed, two Russian helicopters carried out security flights over the airport and its surroundings to secure the area.
Qamishli Airport Was a Critical Point for Russia
Qamishli Airport, which had been closed for a long time, was known during the Assad regime as one of the main bases of Russian military forces in the region and an important control point. Following the overthrow of the regime, the airport was completely closed to use.
No official statement has yet been made regarding the purpose of the Russian aircraft’s landing in Qamishli. It remains unclear whether the aircraft was carrying a diplomatic delegation, arrived for logistical support, or landed in the region as part of a military mission.
