Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu shared remarkable statistics on Turkey’s hot air balloon tourism for the January-September period of 2024. Minister Uraloğlu stated, “In nine months, 32,445 hot air balloons took off, carrying a total of 700,000 domestic and foreign passengers. These numbers indicate that we will surpass the record of 750,000 passengers set in 2022, reaching an all-time high in 2024.”
A Record Expected in 2024
Uraloğlu highlighted that Turkey is approaching a turning point in hot air balloon tourism, noting that the number of passengers recorded before the full start of the season is promising. “This year, we are on track to break records in balloon tourism. The data we have obtained show that the 2022 record of 750,000 passengers will be exceeded in 2024, reaching the highest passenger count ever,” he said.
Turkey, the World’s Largest Commercial Hot Air Balloon Operation
Minister Uraloğlu emphasized that Turkey is the leading country globally in commercial hot air balloon operations, with 70 licensed hot air balloon operators, 6 training organizations, and 1 manufacturing organization in operation. He noted that activities in this sector are carried out with 439 hot air balloons and 712 balloon pilots across Turkey.
Cappadocia Maintains Its Top Spot
Uraloğlu pointed out that 80% of balloon flights in Turkey take place in Cappadocia, which, thanks to its wind patterns and climate, offers flight opportunities on an average of 250 days per year. “Cappadocia continues to be the most active region globally for hot air balloon flights. The number of flights conducted in a single day here is on par with the numbers seen at international festivals,” he remarked.
Flights from Seven Regions
In Turkey, hot air balloon flights are conducted in seven different regions, including Cappadocia, Pamukkale, Soğanlı, Çat, Ihlara, Afyonkarahisar, and Antalya. This variety offers both domestic and international tourists the opportunity to experience unique landscapes and enjoy a one-of-a-kind experience.
