The Green Party, a member of Germany’s coalition government, has proposed implementing bankruptcy insurance for airlines, similar to the ATOL (Air Travel Organisers’ Licence) in the United Kingdom and the German Travel Security Fund (DSRF). Members of Parliament Stefan Schmidt and Linda Heitmann called on the Justice Minister to ensure better consumer protection in the event of airline bankruptcies.
Green Party’s Call to the Justice Minister
In their letter to the Justice Minister, Schmidt and Heitmann emphasized, “Unfortunately, the risk of bankruptcy among airlines is present everywhere,” highlighting the need for greater consumer protection against this risk. They cited the bankruptcies of Air Berlin in 2017 and Germania in 2018, which affected hundreds of thousands of passengers.
Bankruptcy Insurance Requirement in the Government Agreement
The MPs noted that the coalition agreement includes the need to work towards incorporating individual air travel under the European package travel directive’s protected services. They urged the Justice Minister to advocate for this position in Brussels.
