Pegasus temporarily suspends Montenegro flights, solution expected

Pegasus Airlines has temporarily suspended its Montenegro flights after Montenegro reinstated the visa requirement for Turkish citizens. Chairman Mehmet Nane stated that the decision, driven by declining demand, will be reconsidered once conditions normalise.

Pegasus Airlines Chairman Mehmet Nane announced that flights to Montenegro have been temporarily suspended following Montenegro’s reinstatement of the visa requirement for citizens of the Republic of Türkiye. Noting a significant drop in passenger demand after visa-free travel was suspended, Nane said the decision was made with operational efficiency in mind.

Nane stated, “Rather than flying planes that are largely empty, we preferred to suspend the flights for now. I foresee that once conditions normalise, these flights will resume and the visa requirement will either be fully lifted or turned into a more practical process.”

Emphasising that the decision is temporary rather than permanent, the Pegasus Chairman added that flights will resume once favourable conditions are restored.

What Happened?

The Montenegrin government has temporarily suspended visa-free travel for Turkish citizens. Under the official regulation, Turkish nationals are now required to obtain a visa to enter the country.

While the measure is expected to negatively affect not only Turkish tourism but also the Montenegrin economy, it is anticipated that an interim solution will be found between the two countries. For instance, it has been suggested that an arrangement similar to the “Islands Visa” model—applied between Türkiye and Greece to allow Turkish citizens easier entry to certain islands—could be introduced.

It is also known that the European Commission has taken steps to facilitate the visa process for Turkish citizens travelling to the Schengen area.
