The Nigerian Air Force is making a significant move to strengthen its defense capabilities to combat armed gangs and terrorist groups in the northwest of the country. Air Force Chief Marshal Hassan Bala Abubakar announced during the inauguration of new military facilities that they will be purchasing a total of 50 new aircraft. This includes 12 AH-1 attack helicopters, 24 M-346 combat aircraft, 12 AW109 multi-purpose helicopters, and 2 Casa 295 transport aircraft, with delivery expected next year.
Abubakar highlighted that this acquisition will bolster operations against radical groups. However, some analysts argue that the aircraft purchase is beyond Nigeria’s needs and that resources should be directed towards ground forces. These analysts emphasize the importance of focusing on the training and welfare of ground troops, suggesting that investment in the air force should be redirected to these units.
Abubakar’s announcement came shortly after Kaduna state officials revealed plans to establish three new fronts within the state in collaboration with the military. Kaduna Governor Uba Sani announced the creation of forward operating bases in the regions of Southern Kaduna, Giva, and Birnin-Gwari.
The Nigerian Air Force faced harsh criticism last December following an airstrike in Kaduna state that resulted in over 80 fatalities. Nigerian Chief of Defense Staff General Christopher Musa stated that the military would take necessary measures to avoid similar mistakes by conducting more precise operations. Some experts insist that airstrikes should be intelligence-driven and advocate for increased use of drones.
