NASA seeks new jet to replace aging T-38 trainer

NASA must replace its 60-year-old T-38N Talon jets after the Air Force phases them out. The agency issued a market survey in August seeking modern alternatives. The new aircraft must replicate high-G, supersonic training essential for astronaut readiness.

NASA’s fleet of 25 T-38N Talons, used since 1964 for astronaut training and chase missions, faces obsolescence as Air Force support ends by 2035. The agency seeks a limited evaluation of modern jets at Johnson Space Center to test logistics, cost, and training fidelity before any procurement decision. No formal buy is planned yet.

The replacement must deliver punishing flight dynamics-high G-forces, rapid climb, steep glide ratios-to simulate spacecraft handling. Unlike the Air Force’s T-7A Red Hawk, designed for fifth-gen fighter training, NASA needs a plane that forces real-time, high-stakes decisions under lethal risk, mirroring orbital vehicle operations.

Astronauts rely on the T-38’s unforgiving performance to prepare for spacecraft emergencies. Delayed replacement risks gaps in critical flight readiness training as legacy parts vanish and maintenance collapses with Air Force retirement.
