A CH-47F heavy-lift helicopter belonging to the Army Aviation Command, which was carrying out a training flight in the Temelli region of Ankara, crashed. The Ministry of National Defence (MoD) announced that the personnel involved in the incident are in good health.
Official Statement from the MoD: “Cause Still Unknown”
In a written statement made by the Ministry of National Defence, it was stated that the helicopter crashed during a training flight for an as yet unknown reason, and the following remarks were included:
“One of our CH-47 Heavy Lift Helicopters belonging to our Army Aviation Command has crashed for an unknown reason in the Ankara/Temelli region where it was conducting a training flight. There is no negative condition affecting our personnel. The cause of the accident will be determined following a detailed investigation.”
Teams Dispatched to the Scene, Investigation Launched
Following the crash, search and rescue teams were dispatched to the area, and a technical investigation process into the cause of the incident has been initiated. While initial findings have not been shared with the public, it is reported that military authorities are conducting a comprehensive assessment.
11 Units in the Turkish Armed Forces Inventory
There are a total of 11 CH-47F Chinook heavy-lift helicopters in the inventory of the Turkish Armed Forces. These helicopters were procured under contracts signed in 2011 and 2015 and were delivered in phases between 2016 and 2019.
The first delivery took place on 14 July 2016, and with subsequent batches, the entire fleet entered service by 2019. While the helicopters are actively operated within the Land Forces Command and the Special Forces Command, it is known that one platform has been allocated for the needs of the Ministry of National Defence.
