Plane from Turkey Overran Runway at Münster-Osnabrück Airport

On Wednesday evening, a MGA Airlines aircraft from Turkey overran the runway at Münster-Osnabrück Airport (FMO) in Germany. Approximately 200 passengers on board escaped unharmed. The incident was announced by the airport on Thursday night.

Runway Lights Damaged

According to an airport spokesperson, the aircraft destroyed four runway end lights marking the runway limit. The pilot applied sudden braking to prevent the plane from fully sliding off the runway. Fire officials emphasized that the accident was narrowly avoided. The plane reportedly stopped about 15–20 meters before the end of the asphalt runway.

Heavy Rain and Operations

There was heavy rain during the aircraft’s landing. A spokesperson for German Air Traffic Control stated that the plane’s landing was delayed. A MGA Airlines spokesperson explained that the situation was due to weather conditions. Passengers were disembarked via the aircraft stairs, and the plane was towed to a parking area.

Airport operations were halted for several hours following the incident. Four incoming flights were redirected to Hannover and Cologne airports, and three flights to Antalya were cancelled. Passengers were transported by bus to Cologne and Düsseldorf airports.

Flight Records and Investigation

Flights at FMO have resumed. The exact cause of the accident has not yet been determined. The Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (FMI) is investigating whether the pilot delayed the landing and why. Flight recorders are being examined for this purpose. The damage to the runway lights is estimated at around €10,000–15,000. No damage occurred to the Boeing 737-800 aircraft itself.
