Malaysia Airlines’ registered 9M-MAD Airbus A350-900 was performing flight MH-71 from Tokyo Narita to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, when it was flying over the East China Sea at FL400, approximately 730 nautical miles southwest of Tokyo.
Due to a malfunction in the left engine (Rolls-Royce Trent XWB), it was decided to shut it down and return to Tokyo Haneda. After descending to FL230 following the engine shutdown, the aircraft safely landed on runway 34L at Haneda approximately 2 hours after the decision to return.
The aircraft remained on the ground at Haneda Airport, and the flight was canceled.
The airline reported that the aircraft was diverted to Tokyo Haneda Airport due to the closure of Narita Airport during the late hours of the night.
