Major Increase in Overseas Departure Fee

The Ministry of Finance has initiated a study to redefine the current overseas departure fee, which is currently 150 Turkish Lira, to a range between 1000 and 1750 Turkish Lira. According to a report by Canan Sakarya from Ekonomim, this increase is expected to be one of the significant ‘revenue-boosting’ elements in the tax package that will be brought to the agenda of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) after the Eid holiday.

Increase Rate Between 566% and 1066%

The current overseas departure fee of 150 Turkish Lira is expected to be redefined within the range of 1000 to 1750 Turkish Lira. If the fee is set at 1000 Turkish Lira, the increase rate will be 566%, and if set at 1750 Turkish Lira, the increase rate will be 1066%.

There Was an Increase in March 2022

The report states that this astronomical increase was decided upon following assessments that the fee, which was increased from 50 Turkish Lira to 150 Turkish Lira in March 2022, remained ‘very low over time.’ This new regulation represents a significant cost increase for citizens traveling abroad and awaits approval from the TBMM.

This increase will be included in the tax package to be discussed in the parliament after the Eid holiday, and if accepted, it will come into effect. How this increase will impact overseas travel remains a topic of curiosity.
