According to a report by The Observer dated 9 November, the UK government has launched an official investigation to determine whether the purchase of $50 million worth of aircraft from Russia violates the current sanctions regime.
Official trade data shows that British companies imported $105 million worth of goods from Russia in the one-year period up to June 2025. This figure represents a 21% increase compared to the previous year. Approximately half of these imports consisted of aviation products. This has raised concerns that the import ban on Russian aviation technology and equipment may have been potentially breached.
Statement from the Department for Business and Sanctions Warning
Officials from the Department for Business and Trade have not yet disclosed which companies carried out the purchases or whether the transactions violated sanctions.
A government spokesperson stated, “Failure to comply with sanctions is a serious offence that can result in heavy fines or criminal prosecution,” and urged anyone aware of violations to report them.
These imports are regarded as the first aircraft deliveries from Russia to the United Kingdom since the sanctions imposed following the invasion of Ukraine.
The Observer also recalled earlier reports from this year suggesting that some aircraft parts manufactured in the UK were re-exported to Russia via India.
Political Reactions and Security Concerns
Liberal Democrat Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Calum Miller criticised the government, emphasising that the entry of Russian aircraft into the United Kingdom poses serious security concerns.
Miller said, “Under this government’s watch, Britain has imported more Russian goods, and Moscow has paid tens of millions of dollars to purchase aircraft. The British public will be horrified to learn that their country continues to fill Putin’s war chest.”
Bloomberg: UK Sends New Storm Shadow Missiles to Ukraine
According to a Bloomberg report citing sources familiar with the matter, the United Kingdom recently delivered a new shipment of Storm Shadow cruise missiles to Ukraine.
The unspecified number of missiles was sent at a time when Russia is expected to intensify attacks on Ukrainian civilians during the winter months, aiming to strengthen Kyiv’s defensive capabilities.
This delivery once again demonstrates London’s determination to continue providing military support to Ukraine, ensuring its long-range strike capability.
