South Korea’s homegrown fighter jet KF-21 is boosting its global recognition with test flights conducted by commanders from Poland and Indonesia.
South Korea’s national fighter jet project, the KF-21 Boramae, has reached a major international milestone. On June 26, 2025, Polish Air Force Commander Lieutenant General Ireneusz Nowak successfully completed his first flight in the KF-21, followed the next day by Indonesian Air Force Colonel Ferrel Rigonald.
Lt. Gen. Nowak flew in the rear seat of a two-seater KF-21 prototype at KAI’s Sacheon facility, while Colonel Rigonald piloted the jet from the front seat. These flights showcased both the progress of South Korea’s defense technology and the KF-21’s transition toward operational maturity.
Historic Flight by Indonesia
According to The Avionist, Colonel Rigonald’s flight took place on the morning of June 27, beginning at 09:45 and lasting about an hour. He successfully completed several test manoeuvres at an altitude of 20,000 feet. South Korean test pilot Koh Hwi Seok also participated in the flight. Indonesia’s Ministry of Defence described the mission as a “historic milestone.” While the joint development program, launched in 2014, faced financial challenges and data leakage concerns over the years, this flight is seen as a strong sign of Indonesia’s continued commitment to the project.
Poland Eyes 32 KF-21 Fighters
On the Polish side, the flight signals a potential replacement for the country’s aging Soviet-era MiG-29 fleet. Having previously acquired FA-50 jets within just 15 months, Poland is now considering the purchase of 32 KF-21 fighters. South Korean defense manufacturer KAI views this interest as a key opportunity to strengthen its presence in the European market.
KF-21 Is Now Operational, Not Just Developmental
Experts note that active test flight participation by countries like Poland and Indonesia shows the KF-21 is no longer just a prototype under development but is now gaining recognition as a viable operational fighter platform in the international market. South Korea has thus reached a strategic threshold in both defense exports and its global defense industry standing.
