Israeli F-35I Downs Iranian Yak-130: First Jet-to-Jet Air Combat in the War

The Israel Defense Forces announced that an F-35I “Adir” fighter jet shot down an Iranian Yak-130. The incident marked the first recorded jet-to-jet air combat in the Israel-Iran war.

Critical Threshold in the Israel-Iran War: First Air-to-Air Engagement

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Wednesday that an Israeli F-35I Adir fighter jet downed a Yak-130 aircraft belonging to the Iranian Air Force. Officials described this development as the first air-to-air engagement between fighter jets in the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict.

While the IDF did not disclose the exact location of the clash, it reported that the incident occurred during active operations and that the Iranian aircraft was intercepted and destroyed.

Iran’s Yak-130 Maneuver

The Yak-130, developed by Russia’s Yakovlev Design Bureau, is known as an advanced jet trainer designed in the 1990s to train pilots for modern combat aircraft.

Although its primary role is training, the Yak-130 can carry short-range air-to-air missiles, rockets, and guided bombs. Reports indicate that Iran uses these aircraft especially against drones and for medium-to-low altitude air defense patrols.

Observers noted that the Yak-130s operated in coordination with MiG-29 fighter jets within Iran’s inventory.

Role and Superiority of the F-35I “Adir”

The F-35I “Adir” involved in the engagement stands out as Israel’s customized version of the U.S.-made F-35 platform. Equipped with Israeli-made avionics and electronic warfare systems, the aircraft plays an active role in air superiority, intelligence gathering, and precision strike missions.

Thanks to its low radar signature (stealth) and integrated sensors, the F-35 is evaluated to have an advantage in detecting and engaging adversaries earlier in air-to-air confrontations. Experts suggest these capabilities can be decisive against platforms like the Yak-130, which have more limited sensor capacities.

A New Era in the Conflict

The incident comes after both sides recently intensified attacks on airbases and military infrastructure. Israel is reportedly conducting operations aimed at limiting Iran’s fighter jet capabilities, while Iran focuses on defending airspace over major cities.
