The Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) has successfully conducted the first test flight of the French-made Dassault Rafale F4 fighter jet. The two-seat Rafale B, tail number T-0301, took off from the Bordeaux-Mérignac facility on 19 September 2025.
Delivery Schedule
Indonesia plans to purchase a total of 42 Rafale jets, including 16 twin-seat and 26 single-seat variants. TNI AU Chief of Staff Air Marshal Tonny Harjono stated, “We plan to receive the first three aircraft between February and March 2026, followed by the second batch in April 2026.” The new aircraft are expected to significantly enhance the defensive capabilities of the existing air fleet.
Technical Features and Contributions
Painted in dual-tone grey camouflage with TNI AU markings, T-0301 will serve with the 12th Air Squadron under the 6th Air Wing. The Rafales will operate alongside approximately 30 U.S.-made F-16s, five Su-27SKMs, and 11 Su-30MK2 Flankers. The operational fleet also includes 21 BAE Hawk 200 light attack aircraft.
Training Process
Indonesia has sent four pilots and 12 technicians to France for Rafale operations training. The programme covers aircraft systems, avionics, weapons integration, and simulator flights. This ensures that pilots and technical crews will be able to operate the new fighter jets at full capacity.
Defence Cooperation
Defence cooperation between Indonesia and France will not be limited to Rafale deliveries. Under a preliminary agreement signed in May 2025, Scorpene submarines and light frigates may also be considered. French President Emmanuel Macron said, “Today’s letter of intent could open a new perspective for Rafale, Scorpene, and light frigate orders.”
