German engineers have developed a new vibration technology that could reduce energy consumption by 80% in the fight against icing on aircraft wings. The system, which removes ice by cracking it with piezoelectric actuators, was tested under the Clean Aviation programme.

Aviation engineers in Germany have developed an innovative, energy-efficient alternative to current methods used to prevent icing on aircraft wings. According to aviation reports, researchers propose removing ice from the wing surface through vibration instead of using the traditional hot-air system.

Decreased Efficiency in Current Systems

Icing on aircraft wings:

Creates risks for flight stability.

Today’s passenger aircraft use hot air extracted from the engines to eliminate icing. However, this method reduces engine efficiency and leads to high energy consumption.

New Technology: High-Frequency Vibration with Piezoelectric Actuators

In the new method developed by engineers, micro-sized piezoelectric actuators are placed on the wing surface. When current is applied to these actuators:

  • Vibrations form at several kilohertz,
  • The vibration cracks the ice on the wing,

Ice fragments detach and are removed from the surface.

It is stated that this method could reduce energy consumption in anti-icing operations by up to 80%.

The Heart of the System: Real-Time Frequency Algorithm

The most critical component of the project is an advanced algorithm that determines the natural vibration frequency of the wing in real time.

This frequency constantly updates based on variables such as:

  • Flight altitude
  • Speed
  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Ice layer thickness

This ensures optimum performance under all conditions.

Successfully Tested Under the Clean Aviation Programme

The new technology was tested in aerodynamic icing tunnels under the European Union’s “Clean Aviation” programme. Following the positive results, preparations began for its implementation on aircraft.

Aviation authorities indicate that such innovative, low-energy anti-icing systems will become part of future standards in line with carbon emission reduction targets.
