As of January 1, 2025, Iceland, the Scandinavian island nation, has officially joined Eurocontrol as its 42nd member. This milestone comes a decade after the last country joined the organization, marking the culmination of Iceland’s long-standing collaboration with European aviation.
Decades of Integration with European Aviation
As a member of the European Economic Area (EEA), the Schengen Area, and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), Iceland has been integrated into European aviation for over 25 years. Since 1998, Iceland has participated in Eurocontrol Provisional Council meetings as an observer, sharing its expertise in the aviation sector with Europe.
A transitional agreement signed in 2022 paved the way for Iceland’s full membership. Eurocontrol highlighted that this step strengthens Iceland’s role within the European aviation network and contributes to enhancing air traffic management systems across the region.
History of Operational Collaboration
Iceland and Eurocontrol demonstrated critical collaboration during the Eyjafjallajökull volcanic eruption in 2010, when airspace management and traffic coordination were essential. Iceland’s role in maintaining airspace safety and sharing data during this crisis earned significant recognition.
