NATO fighter jets intercepted Russian planes violating flight regulations in international airspace over the Baltic Sea. The incident further escalated tensions between the West and Moscow amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Russian Aircraft Violate International Airspace
According to Lithuania’s Ministry of Defense, NATO jets scrambled on December 23 to intercept an Il-20 aircraft. The Russian plane, flying between Kaliningrad and mainland Russia in international airspace, kept its transponder on but operated without a flight plan.
NATO jets escorted the aircraft back to Russian airspace. Similarly, an An-26 cargo plane was intercepted on December 25, while a Tu-22 strategic bomber accompanied by Su-27 fighters was identified on December 17. These actions raised alarm over potential threats in the Baltic Sea region.
Violations Increasing in Recent Months
Lithuania’s Ministry of Defense reported that NATO completed seven missions addressing Russian flight rule violations during air patrols over Baltic states’ airspace. Over the summer, Sweden and Finland also reported multiple airspace violations by Russian planes.
Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström condemned these incursions as “unacceptable” and announced plans to summon the Russian ambassador in protest.
Tensions Heightened by the Ukraine War
Russia’s actions are increasing tensions at a time when Western support for Ukraine remains steadfast. The repeated violations near NATO countries’ borders not only have military implications but also negatively affect diplomatic relations.
NATO’s swift response underscores the alliance’s commitment to the security of Baltic states and member countries. However, repeated incidents heighten the risk of a more serious conflict.
