As part of its sustainability mission, Hawaiian Airlines is donating hundreds of expired aircraft life vests to help two new entrepreneurs develop waterproof surf bags. This initiative ensures that materials are repurposed effectively instead of being discarded.
Partnership with Think Blue
Hawaiian Airlines has partnered with local startup Think Blue to convert expired life vests into 100% waterproof bags or surf bags. The Think Blue Surf Bag is designed to be spacious enough to hold small snacks, surf wax, electronic car keys, or essential items like credit cards and IDs, providing surfers and outdoor enthusiasts with a handy bag to protect their belongings from harsh weather conditions.
Donated Life Vests
After donating 300 expired life vests in July 2023, Hawaiian Airlines has now donated approximately 600 more. These efforts ensure that the life vests are turned into durable products instead of ending up in landfills. The waterproof bags are tested to IPX7 standards, meaning they can be submerged in water up to 1 meter deep for 30 minutes without letting water in.
Sustainability and Innovation
This initiative promotes sustainability and innovative thinking not only for Hawaiian Airlines but also for the airline industry as a whole. Airlines in the country discard hundreds of life vests each year due to expiration.
