Germany has signed an official contract for 20 new Eurofighter Typhoon jets to enhance Europe’s air defence capacity and reinforce the continent’s commitment to its defence industry hub. The agreement marks a new milestone in European air power collaboration.
Strong Commitment from Germany to the Eurofighter Program
The German government officially signed the contract for the procurement of 20 new Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets with Eurofighter GmbH and the NATO Eurofighter & Tornado Management Agency (NETMA).
The ceremony took place at Airbus’s final assembly facility in Manching, Bavaria.
The new aircraft are planned to be delivered between 2031 and 2034. These jets will replace part of the German Air Force’s (Luftwaffe) retiring Panavia Tornado fleet.
This order comes in addition to the 38 Eurofighters procured by Germany under the Quadriga Project, demonstrating the country’s pursuit of a modern and sustainable air power strategy.
“An Agreement Strengthening Europe’s Defence Resilience”
Eurofighter CEO Jorge Tamarit-Degenhardt highlighted the strategic significance of the signed agreement, stating:
“This contract comes at a time when the Eurofighter programme is approaching a historic milestone of one million flight hours. Germany’s decision underscores its long-term commitment to sovereign European air power and the continuity of our defence supply chain.”
Tamarit-Degenhardt also noted that with Eurofighter’s service life extending beyond 2060 and its advanced technical capabilities, it will “fully integrate into Europe’s future air combat environment.”
Next-Generation Tranche 5: Advanced Radar, Enhanced Electronic Warfare Capability
Airbus will equip the new Tranche 5 Eurofighter jets with the latest sensors.
This package includes the advanced E-Scan AESA radar and the integration of Saab Arexis electronic warfare systems into the German fleet.
These upgrades will significantly enhance the aircraft’s target detection, electronic protection, and mission versatility.
Airbus officials stated that the new equipment will make the Eurofighter “agile, dominant, and resilient on the modern battlefield.”
“This order reflects Germany’s long-term commitment to the Eurofighter programme. The 20 Tranche 5 jets and 52 EJ200 engines will play a key role in maintaining Europe’s air superiority,” they said.
A New Chapter in European Defence
Germany’s new acquisition follows Spain’s order of 25 and Italy’s order of 24 Eurofighters by the end of 2024.
This development reflects the growing political and industrial consensus on investing in Europe’s joint defence infrastructure.
The Eurofighter Typhoon project, Europe’s largest collaborative defence programme, currently employs over 100,000 people across more than 400 companies.
With the new order, the programme’s production continuity and technological innovation capability are secured for many years to come.
