Heathrow Airport has completed the installation of next-generation CT (computed tomography) security scanners across all terminals. Passengers will be able to pass through security without removing liquids and electronic devices from their bags.
The UK’s largest airport, Heathrow, has implemented a major transformation in the passenger experience. Passengers travelling through all terminals will no longer need to take liquids and electronic devices out of their hand luggage during security checks, and the use of plastic bags will also come to an end.
Heathrow has become the first airport in the world to complete the installation of next-generation CT (computed tomography) security scanners across all its terminals. As part of an investment of approximately £1 billion, existing security checkpoints in the four terminals have been upgraded with advanced technology systems that offer high processing capacity, ease pressure during peak hours, and maintain uncompromised security standards.
Faster, More Comfortable Security Screening
The new CT scanners provide much clearer and more detailed images of cabin baggage, significantly reducing passengers’ preparation time. As a result, the security screening process is accelerated, enabling thousands more passengers per hour to be processed more smoothly.
The environmental benefits of the technology are also noteworthy. Thanks to the new system, it is expected that around 16 million single-use plastic bags will be saved each year, leading to a significant reduction in plastic waste.
A Milestone in Long-Term Investment
This upgrade is regarded as a critical milestone in Heathrow’s long-term investment programme. With this step, airport management aims to deliver a first-class passenger experience while also being prepared for future growth and increasing passenger traffic.
In 2024, Heathrow was named Europe’s most punctual transfer airport, with more than 97 per cent of passengers passing through security in under five minutes. Its baggage handling unit achieved a successful loading rate of over 98 per cent in 2025, ensuring that approximately 250,000 more bags were delivered to the correct destinations on time compared with 2024.
