Following diplomatic tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela, security risks in the airspace have reached a notable level. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a new Aviation Notice (NOTAM) regarding flights over Venezuela, warning airlines.
According to the FAA notice, an increase in military activity has been observed, particularly in and around the Maiqueta Flight Information Region (SVZM FIR). This situation poses potential risks to civil aviation. The notice emphasizes that maximum caution must be exercised during all phases of flight, including transit, departure, and landing.
New Requirement in Flight Planning: 72-Hour Prior Notification
Under the new NOTAM, flights into Venezuelan airspace must provide the FAA with at least 72 hours’ prior notification. The FAA stated, “Due to the deteriorating security situation in and around Venezuela and increased military activity, airlines operating at all altitudes within the Maiqueta Flight Information Region are advised to exercise caution.”
This FAA measure serves as a precaution against rising military movements in the region and provides airlines with a critical warning. Aviation safety experts note that the civil aviation sector should reassess its operations in this area.
