In a statement on the X platform, the Ministry of Defense of Peru said, “President Dina Boluarte, together with Minister Walter Astudillo, led the signing of a commercial agreement between SEMAN Peru and Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), allowing our country to produce aviation parts for the FA-50 aircraft. With this agreement, we are strengthening our defense industry! Thanks to the agreement, SEMAN Perú will transform into a production service provider with high production and technology standards by producing 250 aviation parts. Additionally, the aerotechnical capacities of the Peru Maintenance Service (SEMAN PERÚ SAC) will be enhanced, contributing to the increase of its economic and reputation value.”
Furthermore, according to South Korean defense industry researcher Mason, it is also likely that Peru will procure FA-50 aircraft and participate in the KF-21 fighter jet program, which is a 4.5 generation fighter jet project.
Single-Seat FA-50 Fighter Jet Project from South Korea
Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) announced its plans to develop a single-seat version of the FA-50 fighter jet in March 2024. The announcement followed the decision by the board of directors to invest a total of 90.9 billion won (approximately 68.8 million USD) in these projects.
According to a report by Air Recognition, this move came after KAI’s recent successes, such as exporting FA-50 fighter jets to Poland and Malaysia and developing the country’s first indigenous supersonic fighter jet, the KF-21. KAI experienced a significant increase in sales in 2023, reaching 3.8 trillion won (approximately 2.88 billion USD), a 37% increase compared to the previous year.
KAI plans to invest 35.6 billion won (approximately 27 million USD) in developing the single-seat version of the FA-50. The company has so far exported 138 FA-50s, all of which were two-seaters, and has accepted the demand for a single-seat version.
