Eurofighter Consortium Receives New Orders from Italy and Germany
Turkey’s order for 40 fighter jets from the Eurofighter consortium has created a significant opportunity for Airbus and its partners. The Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft, produced in partnership by Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK, has recently received a series of new orders. The Eurofighter consortium, currently producing 38 aircraft for the German Air Force, has entered an intensive production phase with Berlin’s additional request for 20 aircraft and Italy’s order for 24 jets.
Increasing Demands from Germany and Italy
The German government recently approved Saudi Arabia’s request to purchase 48 aircraft. This approval was expedited due to the possibility that Saudi Arabia might turn to French Dassault. Although a final agreement with Saudi Arabia has not yet been reached, consecutive orders from Germany and Italy are drawing attention. The Berlin administration announced that they would add 20 more Eurofighters to the Bundeswehr, while the Italians revealed plans to purchase 24 new Typhoons.
Aviation Expert Gareth Jennings’ Statements
Aviation expert Gareth Jennings noted that the Italian government is working on a new Eurofighter order. The Italian press reported that the purchase of Eurofighter aircraft, known as the F-2000A in the country, is being discussed in the Defense Commission and the Budget Commission. The purchase is expected to cost between 5 and 8 billion euros.
The Eurofighter Project and Its Contributions to the European Economy
In the project, London and Berlin hold a 33% share each, Rome 21%, and Madrid 13%. Eurofighter CEO Giancarlo Mezzanatto stated that the 4.5-generation Eurofighter Block-5 (Tranche-5) version could protect European skies until the 2060s. The Typhoon program has provided employment for more than 20,000 people in Italy alone, and it is crucial for the European aviation industry to maintain production to stay afloat.
PwC Report and Future Projections
According to a report published by PwC a few months ago, if Berlin does not block Eurofighter requests, it is projected that 200 fighter jets could be exported in the next 10 years. These sales will contribute 90 billion euros to the European economy; the economies of the partner countries will gain 22 billion euros in tax revenue and keep more than 98,000 jobs in production.
Annual Eurofighter Production Figures
Since the first Eurofighter Typhoon was delivered to the Royal Air Force in 2003, the 200th aircraft was delivered to Spain in 2009, the 400th to Germany in 2013, and the 500th to Italy in 2017. From 2009 to 2013, 50 Eurofighters were produced annually, but this number later dropped to 25 per year. Over 590 Eurofighter aircraft have been produced to date, with 10 manufactured in 2023. It is noted that annual production could be accelerated with new orders.
