Spanish Media: Turkey’s KAAN Fighter Jet Could Be a Strategic Alternative to the F-35

Spanish media has brought Turkey’s national fighter jet KAAN into focus. Last week, the Spanish government cancelled its plan to purchase F-35 fighter jets manufactured by the US-based Lockheed Martin. With the €6.25 billion investment allocated for this purchase in the 2023 budget left unused, the local press highlighted Turkey’s domestically produced KAAN as a potential option in the search for a new fighter aircraft.

“KAAN Could Be an Alternative to the F-35”

In a report published in the Spain-based Defensa y Seguridad magazine by Roberto Escámez, KAAN was described not merely as a fighter aircraft, but also as a symbol of Turkey’s pursuit of full technological autonomy and the strength of its aerospace industry. The article emphasised that KAAN’s network-centric structure, low radar signature, advanced sensor fusion, domestic engine development plans, and modern avionics place it in competition with the world’s most advanced fighter jets.

A Symbol of the Rise of Turkey’s Defence Industry

It was noted that KAAN, developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ) with contributions from companies such as ASELSAN and Roketsan, is the result of strategic investments and a focus on self-sufficiency.

Spain–Turkey Defence Cooperation

The article highlighted the growing defence cooperation between Spain and Turkey in recent years, as demonstrated by joint projects such as the Hürjet trainer aircraft. These collaborations, which include software development and systems integration, could potentially extend to the KAAN project in the future.

Naval Version Scenario

The report underlined that developing a naval version of KAAN capable of taking off from and landing on aircraft carriers is a “realistic scenario.” Such a version could be an attractive option for a potential Spanish CATOBAR aircraft carrier, with joint development allowing for shared R&D costs.
