Post-Pandemic Transport Network Reopens

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, flights and passenger train services that were suspended in 2020 are being reactivated. Train services between China and North Korea had also resumed on March 12.

North Korea’s national airline Air Koryo had already restarted flights between the capitals in 2023.

Gradual Easing in Tourism and Border Policies

North Korea had completely halted the entry of foreign tourists during the pandemic period. However, restrictions have recently begun to be gradually eased.

In 2024, a group of Russian tourists was reported to have entered the country. Before the pandemic, approximately 90% of foreign tourists visiting North Korea consisted of Chinese groups.

Strategic Balance in China–North Korea Relations

Relations between China and North Korea continue to be significant in terms of trade and diplomacy. China remains North Korea’s largest trading partner.

However, the Beijing administration has, in past years, also expressed dissatisfaction with Pyongyang’s occasional missile tests.

Diplomatic Contacts Draw Attention
