Due to intense summer weather conditions, Delta Air Lines cancelled close to 200 flights at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. According to Atlanta News First, the weather—particularly disruptive during nighttime hours—significantly affected Delta’s operations.
A Delta spokesperson stated, “The safety of our passengers and crew comes first,” noting that the cancellations were a proactive safety measure. Speaking to local station 11 Alive on Friday, the spokesperson confirmed, “Yes, there are cancellations here today due to severe summer weather.”
Turbulence Incident Earlier in the Week Influenced Cancellations
Earlier in the week, Delta flight 56 from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam encountered “severe” turbulence mid-flight, forcing a diversion. Twenty-five passengers were hospitalised as a result.
Passenger Leeann Nash told ABC Minneapolis that there was no warning before the turbulence struck, describing how passengers were thrown toward the ceiling and floor in a terrifying experience:
“If your seatbelt wasn’t on, you hit the ceiling and then crashed down to the floor. Carts were hitting the ceiling, falling down—and this happened multiple times. It was truly frightening.”
Delta Emphasises Safety, Issues Call to Passengers
Following the turbulence incident, Delta officials reiterated that passenger and crew safety remains their top priority. While the cancellations may be disappointing to travellers, officials stressed that the severity of the weather made the decision necessary and understandable.
Delta Air Lines aims to resume normal flight operations as weather conditions improve.
