The Australian Federal Police (AFP) announced that a man has been charged with conducting ‘evil twin’ WiFi attacks at various domestic flights and airports in Perth, Melbourne, and Adelaide. Allegedly, the man created fake WiFi networks to steal passengers’ email and social media credentials.
The AFP stated that the investigation, which began in April 2024, was initiated following reports from airline staff. After examining devices seized at the airports, evidence was found linking the suspect to malicious activities.
An evil twin WiFi attack involves creating a malicious wireless access point that mimics a legitimate WiFi network, tricking users into logging into a fake login page. The suspect is accused of capturing victims’ email addresses, passwords, and other credentials, which were then used for various purposes.
The AFP’s charges include unauthorized interference with electronic communications, data control, unauthorized access, and fraudulently obtaining personal information. The investigation is ongoing.
