An important agreement in the field of air transport has been signed between Southern Cyprus and the People’s Republic of China. It was announced that the Chinese government has decided to lift the visa requirement for Southern Cypriot citizens. This development was revealed alongside the signing of a new memorandum of understanding and an aviation agreement, which will further facilitate air transportation between the two countries.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced this decision during a meeting with the President of the Greek Cypriot Administration, Nikos Christodoulides, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. Greek Cypriot government spokesperson Konstantinos Letimbiotis stated that by lifting the visa requirement for Cypriot citizens, China is strengthening relations between the two countries.
The Cyprus issue was also discussed during the talks. China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, reaffirmed its continued support for the Greek Cypriot administration. The signed air transport agreement further liberalizes flights between the two countries, allowing airlines to operate up to 35 flights per week with various freedom rights.
China’s Ambassador to Southern Cyprus, Liu Yantao, emphasized the agreement’s significance for tourism and trade, while Panayota Dimitriou, Director of the Cypriot Civil Aviation Department, highlighted that this agreement will establish a strong connection between Europe and the Far East.
