The Syrian Civil Aviation Authority has completed all contracts for the development, expansion and operation of Damascus International Airport with an international consortium led by Urbacon Holding, in partnership with Turkish companies Cengiz and Kalyon, as well as the US-based firm Assets. Once implemented, the new project will transform the airport into one of the most critical hubs connecting Syria to the global aviation network.
Capacity to Increase to 6 Million Passengers by the End of 2026
Under the $4 billion agreement, Terminals 1 and 2 will be completely renovated, and the airport’s current annual passenger capacity will be raised to 6 million by the end of 2026. The main component of the project will be the new Terminal 3, which will be built in three phases.
With the completion of the first phase of the new terminal, a new line with an additional annual capacity of 10 million passengers will be added, bringing the total capacity to 16 million within three years.
Annual Capacity of 31 Million Once Completed
In the second and third phases of the project, two additional lines will be constructed, each with a capacity of 7.5 million passengers. Once all stages are completed, the total passenger capacity of Damascus International Airport will increase to 31 million.
Employment for 90,000 People and Major Contribution to the Regional Economy
According to officials, the project will create more than 90,000 direct and indirect jobs. The airport is expected to strengthen its position as a regional hub for trade, tourism and logistics. The initiative also stands out as an important part of Syria’s broader transformation plan to modernise its aviation sector.
International Design Team Including Zaha Hadid Architects
The international design firm Hesco will lead the project with contributions from the renowned Zaha Hadid Architects team. The redesign aims to create an innovative, high-tech airport structure aligned with contemporary architectural standards. A five-star hotel serving passengers and airlines will also be built as part of the project.
$250 Million Additional Investment for Fleet Modernisation
Under the agreement, approximately $250 million will be invested in purchasing new aircraft and modernising the existing fleet. This investment is expected to significantly enhance Syria’s regional and international flight capacity.
