Boeing 777-9 Surpasses Critical Certification Milestone: Maximum Brake Energy Test Successfully Completed

The Boeing 777-9 has successfully passed the maximum brake energy test, one of the most demanding stages of certification. During the test, the aircraft demonstrated its ability to stop safely under extreme conditions.

Boeing 777-9 Passes Critical Certification Test

Developed by Boeing, the Boeing 777-9 successfully completed the maximum brake energy test, considered one of the most challenging phases of the certification process. The test demonstrated the aircraft’s capability to come to a safe stop in the event of a rejected takeoff at high speed.

Test Conducted Based on the Most Severe Scenario

The test process was carried out at Edwards Air Force Base in the United States. Engineers simulated the worst-case scenario in line with certification requirements and loaded the aircraft up to its maximum takeoff weight.

After reaching approximately 190 knots before takeoff, the pilots aborted the takeoff and brought the aircraft to a complete stop using only the braking system.

Brake System Tested Independently

During the test, thrust reversers were not used, and the stop was achieved entirely through the braking system. Flight test engineer Matt England stated that the brakes alone provided 100% of the stopping force.

Additionally, intentionally worn brakes were used to simulate the most adverse conditions.

Extreme Heat and Energy Levels Measured

During the test, the braking system absorbed more than one billion foot-pounds of energy, delivering extremely high performance. During this process:

  • Brake temperatures exceeded 2,500°F (1,371°C)
  • Visible heat flashes occurred

These values confirmed the system’s durability under extreme conditions.

Emergency Scenario Also Simulated

To replicate real airport procedures, emergency response teams were kept on standby during the test; however, their response times were deliberately delayed by five minutes. This practice simulated the intervention process following an actual rejected takeoff.

After the delay, ground crews intervened and cooled the brake and wheel systems.

Full Marks from the Team

777-9 test director Madison Strauss described the process as one of the best-planned tests of the programme. Flight test engineer Brianna Hitchcock stated that such extreme conditions are necessary to validate safety margins.

Captain Heather Ross emphasised confidence in both the aircraft and the team, noting that the test was completed flawlessly.

Certification Process Continues

The certification process of the Boeing 777-9 continues under the supervision of the Federal Aviation Administration. Programme Vice President Terry Beezhold stated that the completion of this test marks a significant step in the certification and delivery process.
