Boeing has received initial qualification approval from both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for its 777-9 flight training simulators. This marks another significant step forward in the regulatory-approved pilot training process for the 777-9.
Announced on 19 February 2026 in Gatwick, United Kingdom, the development could represent a major operational readiness milestone for the 777X programme.
Advanced training infrastructure in Gatwick
The training devices have been installed at the Boeing Training Campus in Gatwick, England. The systems consist of a Full Flight Simulator that accurately replicates the aircraft’s advanced systems, along with a flight training device.
Within the simulators:
- Aircraft systems and flight dynamics
- Environmental conditions
- Operational scenarios are modelled through advanced simulation software to provide pilots with a realistic training experience.
Developed through a joint effort between Boeing and CAE, the devices will also be used in regulatory authorities’ course material validation and approval processes.

777X Chief Technical Pilot Captain Gary Mandy stated that the approval represents a critical threshold in the transition to flight training. He noted that through a comprehensive training experience, pilots will be prepared to support customers’ 777-9 operations.
Chris Broom, Vice President of Commercial Training Solutions at Boeing Global Services, said that the simulator approval demonstrates the company’s commitment to delivering high-quality training solutions that meet the expectations of global airline customers and regulatory bodies.
Alexandre Prevost, President of Civil Aviation at CAE, stated that the qualification process is the result of years of technical cooperation between the two companies.
Key innovations in the 777-9 cockpit
The Boeing 777-9 was designed as the first member of the 777X family. While offering a high level of cockpit commonality with the 777 and the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the aircraft introduces the following innovations for flight crews:
- Large-format displays with touchscreen capability
- Optional dual head-up display (HUD) similar to the 787 Dreamliner
- Redesigned pilot seat offering enhanced comfort
- Dedicated control and indication system for folding wingtips
- Tablet-based Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) integration
