Yesterday morning, a cargo plane that landed at Incheon International Airport suffered a blown tire, resulting in the runway being closed for over 12 hours. This caused extended working hours and disrupted some flight operations. Many passengers were inconvenienced due to the inability of planes to take off and land on time.
According to SBS reports, the cargo plane involved in the incident belonged to the US-based Atlas Air and had taken off from the third runway at Incheon International Airport around 5 AM. However, as the plane took off, a piece of the tire fell off, and an abnormality was detected on the aircraft, forcing it to return to Incheon International Airport. The plane, which landed on the first runway at 7:05 AM, suffered significant damage to its tires and landing gear during this process.
Incheon International Airport authorities closed the first runway, towed the cargo plane, and restored the runway. The three runways where debris had fallen during takeoff were also suspended for three hours. Airport officials stated, “The runway maintenance was delayed because the blown tires were in contact with the surface, and special equipment was used to tow the cargo plane.”
Approximately 12 hours and 30 minutes have passed since the cargo plane landing incident that occurred at 7 AM. Incheon Airport has a total of four runways; one was under construction, and the accident occurred on another, leaving only two runways operational.
As a result, delays in passengers’ takeoffs and landings continued to cause problems. As of 7 PM, out of a total of 740 international flights, 523 were delayed, and 10 out of 14 domestic flights were delayed.
