Atlas Air’s Boeing 777-200 aircraft with registration N709GT, operating flight 5Y-8341 from Hong Kong to Liege, Belgium, encountered severe hail during climb-out after departing from Hong Kong. The aircraft continued its journey to Liege without further incident.
Following the encounter with hail, the aircraft’s meteorological radar was found to be inoperative. Upon landing in Liege, inspections revealed punctures in the vertical stabilizer and the Radome collapsed due to crushing.
Additionally, numerous hail impact marks were discovered around the aircraft. The crew consulted with the airline during the flight and it was advised to proceed to Liege.
The aircraft has been grounded in Liege for 4 days now.
