A series of significant cooperation agreements have been signed between Morocco and Turkey, aiming to enhance both countries’ defense capabilities. With the participation of ASELSAN, one of Turkey’s leading defense companies, these agreements mark a major turning point in Morocco’s production of communication and electronic defense systems. Through this collaboration, Morocco plans to establish domestic production of weapons and electronic systems.
In this context, a Turkish delegation from ASELSAN met with Morocco’s National Defense leaders to discuss potential military partnerships. The visit, organized by Turkey’s Ambassador to Rabat, Mustafa İlker Kılıç, could pave the way for critical security collaborations, including classified operations. Turkish and Moroccan officials aim to deepen strategic ties and establish a long-term partnership that strengthens mutual interests.
New Partnerships and Defense Investments with ASELSAN
This new partnership with ASELSAN includes significant projects such as the establishment of specialized research centers. Morocco has become one of the key customers of the Turkish defense industry. Since signing its first agreements with Baykar in 2021, Morocco has continued procuring Bayraktar TB2 drones. The country has already invested over 715 million dirhams in these UAVs and has allocated more than 510 million dirhams for Coral electronic defense systems.
Last year, Morocco submitted a request to acquire 200 Cobra 2 armored vehicles valued at 1.4 billion dirhams, and the country is also planning to procure Baykar’s Akinci high-altitude UAV in the near future.
New Command Centers and Increased Defense Budget
To strengthen military relations with Turkey, Morocco is planning to establish new command centers in Ankara and New Delhi. These centers aim to oversee military exercises and enhance bilateral ties. Additionally, Morocco’s defense budget has increased by 85 billion dirhams since 2020, and by 2025, the country is expected to have the largest defense budget in its history, targeting around 133 billion dirhams.
According to newly passed legislation, the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces will be provided with all necessary equipment and resources for repairs and production. This massive investment plays a crucial role in Morocco’s strategy to strengthen its military capabilities, establish stronger partnerships, and acquire advanced weapons systems.
Morocco’s Military Position and Future Prospects
The agreements with Turkey signify a qualitative leap for Morocco’s defense industry. Having secured the full trust of the United States, Morocco has further reinforced its military strength through agreements with Israel and Turkey. With its strategic geographic position and international alliances, Morocco is gaining increased importance, particularly in counterterrorism efforts in the Sahel region. These developments could position Morocco as one of the leading military powers in North Africa in the coming years.
