Aselsan, the leading company in the Turkish defence industry, introduced the enhanced version of the KGK-84 wing and guidance kit—one of the most critical munition conversion solutions of the Turkish Air Force—to the global audience at the EDEX Defence Exhibition held in Egypt.
The KGK-84, which converts 2000 lb class free-fall general-purpose bombs (MK-84, MK-84-T, NEB, NEB-T) into high-precision smart munitions, can reach a gliding range of over 100 km when released from an altitude of 40,000 ft thanks to its foldable wing structure. The system can operate at a minimum release altitude of 10,000 ft and offers high strike precision with a CEP value below 10 metres.
Increased Range and Capabilities Targeted with the New Version
It is stated that the upgraded version displayed at the exhibition may not yet have fully achieved the announced 100 km range of the current model, but Aselsan is reportedly accelerating its efforts to extend the range. The new configuration is believed to include improvements especially in aerodynamic design and control algorithms.
Tested on F-16s, JF-17 Integration on the Agenda
According to obtained information, the newly developed KGK-84 version has been successfully tested on F-16 fighter jets in Turkey’s inventory.
According to EDR On-Line, Aselsan may also be planning to test this munition kit on the JF-17 Thunder aircraft jointly produced by China and Pakistan. However, there is no official confirmation that Pakistan has procured the KGK-84 or initiated an integration process.
New Electronic Warfare Capabilities on the Agenda
The GNSS jamming and spoofing activities widely observed during the Russia–Ukraine war pose a critical threat to modern guidance kits. It is claimed that Aselsan has incorporated next-generation electronic countermeasure technologies into the upgraded KGK-84 model to suppress or mitigate the effects of such attacks.
Aselsan’s Munition Family Grows Stronger
Operating on the “Fire-and-Forget” principle, the KGK-84 continues to enhance the operational effectiveness of the Turkish Air Force with its precision strike capability, long range, and resistance to electronic warfare. The upgraded version is expected to play a significant role in Türkiye’s munition modernisation programme.
