China Airlines’ recent Taoyuan–New York flight became one of the most talked-about topics on social media thanks to its all-male cabin crew. Many passengers humorously remarked that the flight “felt like a boy band making their debut.”
Although the striking nature of this flight led some to assume it was a marketing initiative, the planning was entirely driven by the cabin crew themselves. Coordination that began three months earlier allowed the flight to take place smoothly.
China Airlines cabin crew member Derek Lin shared the process on his Instagram account, stating:
“We started planning in August this year. We checked everyone’s bidding habits and schedules. We even decided to cancel the flight if someone more senior among us was assigned. We didn’t expect everyone to get the bid on the first try.”
Lin also mentioned that there has long been an unwritten rule at the airline limiting the number of male cabin crew members, while female crew members are assigned more frequently.
Their reason for choosing the New York flight was a practical one:
“The contracted hotel is in a great area. There are plenty of activities, food options, and opportunities to explore. I fly to JFK at least 8–10 times a year; I know the city well and have friends around who can help.”
Lin concluded his post by expressing hope that this initiative would normalize before being seen as a turning point, adding: “No more gender stereotypes, labels, or outdated expectations.”
Mixed reactions on social media
While many users praised the initiative as a positive step toward inclusivity, others voiced criticisms. One commenter reacted with the following statement:
“For centuries, women had almost no rights at all. This flashy show of an all-male crew feels like an insensitive celebration rather than progress.”
China Airlines has not yet issued an official statement on the matter, and discussion continues within the aviation industry about this unusual initiative.
