American Cruise Lines has christened its newest small ship, American Maverick, in Newport, Rhode Island, marking the vessel’s official debut during a 9-day New England Islands sailing round-trip from Providence.
The christening brought together guests, crew, community partners and employees from the company’s Connecticut headquarters for a ceremony held onboard the ship while docked in Newport Harbor. Following the event, guests attended a traditional New England lobster bake at Fort Adams State Park.
American Maverick is the latest addition to the line’s U.S.-flagged fleet of small cruise ships designed for domestic itineraries along U.S. waterways. The 130-guest vessel becomes the newest ship in service as the company continues to expand capacity across river and coastal cruising in the United States.
Fleet Expansion Across U.S. Rivers and Coasts
The debut of American Maverick comes amid continued fleet growth for American Cruise Lines, which has additional vessels scheduled for delivery over the next year, including American Ranger, American Mariner and American Navigator. The company also launched American Encore in May.
Accommodating 130 guests, American Maverick features four decks and all-private balcony staterooms, including single-occupancy cabins and suites. Public spaces include multiple lounges, a top-deck lounge with a walking track, a chart room, a main restaurant, a casual cafe and a fitness center.
During the christening ceremony, American Cruise Lines President and CEO Charles B. Robertson highlighted the vessel’s role in shaping the company’s future fleet direction.
“We set the bar high for ourselves with American Maverick and were surprised to see that we set the bar for the rest of the river cruise industry in the process,” said Robertson, in a media statement. “The American Maverick is the new standard by which others should follow, and with eight more ships under construction, shows that the U.S. river cruise market will lead the way.”
Godmother Susan Renner, the cruise line’s Board Chair and Treasurer, also participated in the onboard ceremony, which concluded with the traditional bottle smash.
