Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport, Turkey’s second busiest and one of Europe’s top 10 busiest airports, set a new record on Saturday, July 13th, by hosting 133,455 passengers in a single day. The previous record was set on August 20, 2023, with 132,097 passengers.
Major Achievement in 2023 Passenger Numbers
Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen achieved significant success in 2023, ending the year with a total of 37.1 million passengers. According to the European International Airports Council (ACI EUROPE) data, Sabiha Gökçen ranks second in the ‘mega airports’ category, which accommodates 25 to 40 million passengers annually, with a 13.2% increase.
Second Runway and New Airport Routes
With the addition of the second runway, Sabiha Gökçen Airport has increased its passenger capacity, contributing significantly to Turkish tourism. As of 2024, the airport has expanded Istanbul’s global connectivity by opening 9 new international routes.
Known as the “city’s airport” due to its diverse urban transportation options and proximity to city centers, Sabiha Gökçen serves 40 domestic and 124 international destinations in 54 countries. With strong connections to a total of 164 destinations, the airport stands as a major transportation hub.
