Call for Direct Flights to TRNC from 54 MPs in the UK
In the UK, 54 Members of Parliament from various political parties have signed a letter addressed to Foreign Secretary David Cameron, urging the commencement of direct flights to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). This group, comprising MPs from the ruling Conservative Party and the main opposition Labour Party, expressed their support for initiating direct flights from the UK to Ercan International Airport, the largest airport on the island of Cyprus.
The letter emphasized the UK’s responsibility to ensure that all Cypriots, regardless of ethnic background, can realize their potential and live without arbitrary discrimination. It highlighted that there are 300,000 Turkish Cypriots living in the UK and 15,000 British citizens residing in the TRNC. The MPs criticized the British government for failing to fulfill its commitment to end the isolation of the Turkish Cypriot community and for being reluctant to discuss easing measures on this issue.
The MPs pointed out that the UK allows flights to some countries it does not officially recognize, stating, “If the UK permits flights to countries like Kosovo, which is not a United Nations member, and to Taiwan, which it does not officially recognize, why not to the TRNC?” They also emphasized that the new Ercan International Airport meets international aviation security standards and safely accommodates hundreds of thousands of passengers each year.
