Among the most widely preferred platforms of fifth-generation fighter jets, the F-35 Lightning II is entering a groundbreaking new phase in aviation technology. US-based defence industry giant Lockheed Martin has announced plans to develop an optionally unmanned version of the F-35.
Lockheed Martin CEO Jim Taiclet, sharing the company’s forward-looking innovation goals, revealed that they are working on an enhanced version of the F-35, defined as “5th Generation Plus (5+ Gen).” This new version will feature enhanced stealth technology, aerodynamic optimisations, and most notably, the capability for optional unmanned (pilotless) flight.
Sixth-Generation Technologies to Be Integrated into the F-35
Speaking at the Bernstein Strategic Decisions Conference, Taiclet stated, “We are preparing to integrate the experience we’ve gained from our sixth-generation fighter jet development efforts into the F-35 platform. In the near future, we may be able to make the F-35 optionally crewless.”
Taiclet emphasised that this technological transformation will not remain theoretical, adding that “a significant increase in capability will be achieved with the integration of certain sixth-generation technologies into the F-35 within the next 2–3 years.”
Intensifying Competition in Aviation
Lockheed Martin’s move comes at a time when global competition in advanced warfare technologies is escalating rapidly, aiming to further strengthen the F-35’s role on the modern battlefield. Thanks to its unmanned operation feature, the F-35 will be able to offer more flexible and lower-risk solutions in line with future warfare concepts.
