On Tuesday, United Airlines flight UA1679 from San Francisco to Cancun, Mexico, experienced an unexpected delay of nearly four hours due to an incident on the runway. The captain refused to fly after noticing a passenger smoking marijuana in the lavatory, fearing exposure could affect the results of a mandatory drug test.
A viral Reddit post revealed that passengers were initially told the delay was due to “technical issues,” but later it was disclosed the flight was postponed again because “someone smoked marijuana in the bathroom.” After passengers were deplaned, they waited about 40 minutes onboard for a new crew.
The pilot reportedly said, “I’m not risking my 30-year career at United; I don’t want to face a drug test risk when I get to Houston.” Passengers were left disappointed as the departure time slipped from 8:50 AM to about 12:30 PM. The airline provided $15 meal vouchers and snacks at the gate.
Flight experts noted that secondhand marijuana smoke exposure in a closed airplane cabin is unlikely to affect drug test results. However, the FAA’s zero-tolerance drug policies and harsh penalties for positive tests justified the pilot’s concerns.
Gary Leff, writer for View From the Wing, warned that a positive test could end a pilot’s career and that unions typically do not protect pilots without evidence of passive exposure. He also emphasized pilots’ responsibility to self-report any impairment risk.
Reddit users reacted strongly against the passenger; some argued such behavior should lead to hefty fines and lifetime bans from airlines. Meanwhile, most praised the pilot’s decision, with many comments stating, “The captain did what he had to do.”
