On Wednesday night at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, two passenger planes belonging to Delta Air Lines collided during taxiing. The airline reported that the incident was recorded as a “low-speed collision.”
According to officials, Endeavor Air Flight 5047 from Charlotte, North Carolina, and Endeavor Air Flight 5155, scheduled to fly to Roanoke, Virginia, made contact on the taxiway. Preliminary reports indicate that the wing of Flight 5155 struck the fuselage of Flight 5047.
The accident occurred just before 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and one flight attendant sustained minor injuries. The attendant was treated on-site and then transported to a hospital.
Delta stated that Flight 5155 had 28 passengers and four crew members, totaling 32 people, while Flight 5047 had 57 passengers and four crew members, totaling 61 people. Passengers were evacuated from the planes and transported to the terminal by buses. The airline provided hotel accommodations for those in need and arranged new bookings for the following day.
In a statement, Delta Air Lines said, “The safety of our customers and crews comes first. We are reviewing the details of the incident in cooperation with all relevant authorities. We apologize for the experience our customers endured.”
The Port Authority reported that the incident had no impact on airport operations. The cause of the collision has not yet been determined.
