Türkiye generated more than 33 billion lira in revenue from airspace usage last year. According to EUROCONTROL data, Türkiye rose to 2nd place in Europe in terms of airspace demand, while surpassing the European average in service unit growth.
The 2025 Activity Report published by the General Directorate of State Airports Authority revealed that Turkish airspace has further increased its strategic weight in Europe. According to the report, Türkiye generated approximately 33 billion 55 million lira in revenue from the use of its airspace last year.
Revenue, which stood at 21.5 billion lira the previous year, reached a new record with an increase of approximately 53 percent. The increase reflects not only the rise in transit flight traffic but also Türkiye’s strength as an air corridor connecting Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
One of Europe’s Busiest Air Corridors
According to EUROCONTROL data, Türkiye ranked 6th among 42 member countries in terms of “national cost-base size.” In airspace demand, it climbed to 2nd place across Europe.
Particularly during November and December of last year and January of this year, Türkiye became the country with the highest number of service units in European airspace.
According to aviation experts, Türkiye’s geographical location provides major advantages for global airlines in terms of both fuel efficiency and route optimisation. The intense traffic between Europe and the Gulf, Africa, and the Far East is transforming Turkish airspace into a strategic transit corridor.
Türkiye Surpassed the European Average
EUROCONTROL data also revealed that Türkiye outperformed the European average in growth rate. While the average service unit growth rate among member countries remained at 5.5 percent, the rate in Türkiye reached 9.3 percent.
At the end of last year, the total number of service units was recorded at approximately 21.9 million.
Experts note that the increase in service units is directly linked to air traffic density, route usage, and overflight revenues. While rising flight numbers boost Türkiye’s air navigation revenues, they also increase the need for investment in air traffic control infrastructure.
Istanbul-Centred Traffic Power Is Shaping Europe
In particular, the expansion of operations centred around Istanbul Airport is making a significant contribution to Türkiye’s airspace usage revenues. The high transit capacity of Turkish airspace is making Türkiye indispensable in the route planning of global airlines.
Geopolitical changes in the aviation sector in recent years and the search for alternative routes are also among the factors increasing Türkiye’s importance. The reshaping of air corridors following the Russia-Ukraine war, the rise in Middle East-centred traffic, and the restructuring of Asia-linked flights have strengthened Türkiye’s role in European air traffic.

According to experts, airspace revenues are no longer merely a technical navigation item; they are becoming an important part of countries’ aviation diplomacy and economic strength. Türkiye’s rising performance demonstrates not only the scale of its civil aviation sector but also its regional logistical superiority.
