Turkish Airlines is preparing to launch direct flights between Istanbul and Sydney using specially configured ultra long-range Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft. The flights, expected to last up to 19 hours, will open the door to a new era in aviation.
Turkish Airlines (THY) is preparing to implement a new project that could reshape global aviation dynamics. The company has accelerated its efforts for what will become its longest-ever flight operation between Istanbul and Sydney. According to statements made by Turkish Airlines Chairman of the Board and Executive Committee Prof. Dr. Murat Şeker, the airline aims to launch non-stop flights to Sydney in the coming years using specially equipped Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft.
The Istanbul-Sydney route, covering approximately 9,300 miles, is expected to have a flight duration of up to 19 hours. The project is regarded as Turkish Airlines’ biggest step into ultra long-range operations.
THY’s Ultra Long-Range Operations Initiative
Following the Airbus A350-900 aircraft already in its fleet, Turkish Airlines is accelerating its transition to the larger-capacity A350-1000 model.
The company placed an order for 15 Airbus A350-1000 aircraft in 2023. It was stated that eight of these aircraft will be ultra long-range (ULR) versions, while work continues on special cabin configurations and range optimization as part of the project.
The Istanbul-Sydney Route Could Last 19 Hours
The flight planned by THY between Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) will rank among the world’s longest direct routes.
Prof. Dr. Murat Şeker stated that there are no operational obstacles, but discussions with Airbus are continuing regarding the economic efficiency of ultra long-range aircraft.
Şeker made the following statement:
“We have some business-related challenges concerning the A350-1000s specially designed for ultra long-haul operations. Discussions with Airbus are continuing regarding passenger capacity, cargo balance, aircraft weight, and the required fuel volume.”
A350-1000ULR Deliveries to Continue Until 2027
The first Airbus A350-1000 aircraft is planned to be delivered in July next year. The third aircraft is expected to join the fleet by the end of 2027.
It was noted that the delivery process depends on the ongoing maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) certification studies.
THY management aims to launch direct Istanbul-Sydney flights toward the end of 2027 following the completion of the certification process.
Next-Generation Business Class Suites Are Coming
One of the most notable innovations on THY’s ultra long-range aircraft will be the next-generation business class cabins.
While standard A350-1000 aircraft feature 48 business class seats, this number will increase to 66 in the ULR versions. The new cabin design will also include a premium economy class.
Door-Equipped Suites Offering “Complete Privacy”
The new business class product developed by THY subsidiary TCI Aircraft Interiors will feature a door-equipped suite concept.
The new design is expected to offer passengers a “complete privacy experience,” while significantly increasing comfort levels, especially on ultra long-haul flights.
While the certification process for the new seats continues, the first deliveries are planned to begin next year.
THY Preparing for New Destinations in the U.S.
Turkish Airlines is focusing not only on the Sydney operation but also on its growth in the U.S. market.
Prof. Dr. Murat Şeker stated that frequency increases are planned on existing destinations while new cities are also being evaluated.
Orlando and Minneapolis on the Agenda
Among the new destinations under evaluation by the company are Orlando, Minneapolis, and Philadelphia.
In addition, frequency increases are planned on existing routes such as Miami, Los Angeles, and Chicago.
Şeker emphasized that significant expansion will take place across THY’s global network once new aircraft deliveries begin.
THY Launches Major Transformation in Passenger Experience
It was stated that the company is making major investments not only in fleet growth but also in passenger experience.
THY renewed its catering services earlier this year and also introduced a new service program for cabin crews.
Şeker stated that the changes have positively impacted the Net Promoter Score (NPS), emphasizing that significant improvements have been achieved particularly in the new passenger experience.
Lounge and Wi-Fi Investments Continue
THY is expected to continue focusing on lounge experience, inflight internet services, and Istanbul-centered operational growth in the coming period.
