Turkish Airlines Set to Expand in the U.S.: Eyes on Orlando, Minneapolis, and Philadelphia

Turkish Airlines (THY), the airline that flies to more countries than any other in the world, is preparing to expand its presence in the United States as part of its global growth strategy. Currently operating scheduled flights to 14 destinations across the U.S., THY aims to increase this number to 20.

New Routes on the Horizon

According to information shared in investor presentations by THY management, new short-term destinations under consideration include:

  • Orlando, Florida

  • Minneapolis, Minnesota

  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

  • Charlotte, North Carolina

The airline’s CEO stated that plans for these destinations are progressing. Based on passenger traffic connecting via Istanbul, the estimated annual passenger potential for these cities is as follows:

  • Minneapolis: 11,000 passengers

  • Orlando: 9,000 passengers

  • Philadelphia: 4,000 passengers

  • Charlotte: 4,000 passengers
(based on the 12-month period ending July 2024)

Connecting Traffic and Incentives Will Be Key

However, the launch of new routes depends on more than just direct passenger demand. Two key factors play a critical role:

  • Transit Traffic: The volume of connecting passengers via Istanbul Airport is a major factor in determining the sustainability of these routes. THY’s global network offers strong transfer capabilities, enhancing route profitability.

  • Local Incentives and Subsidies: Many U.S. airports offer financial support, marketing budgets, or tax incentives to encourage international carriers to launch new routes. However, details of such incentives are rarely made public.

The U.S.: A Strategic Market for Turkish Airlines

THY’s expansion plans aim to capture a greater share of both direct and connecting traffic in a highly competitive U.S. market. Thanks to Istanbul’s geographic location, the airline offers a convenient one-stop connection to the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Europe—making it an attractive choice for transit passengers.
